MiG-29, the only Jet in which Civilians can go Supersonic
Unleash your inner Maverick! This is the last chance for real Top Gun Adventure. The MiG-29 supersonic flights are the last possibility to break the sound barrier for civilians. Only a few years ago, you would have had the possibility to fly the Mach 2 Concorde supersonic passenger jet. These flights ceased in 2003. The Soviet counterpart Tu-144 “Charger” with a vmax of 3000 km/h had the last flight already in 1999.
Currently, only the MiG-29 Fulcrum remains for supersonic flights with Civilians – the last supersonic ride worldwide!
Supersonic Flights for Tourists: Take it while it lasts.
After the Cold War, the unthinkable became possible: To fly modern military combat fighter jets. Many of these military aircraft are still in service with air forces around the world. Two places have been known for allowing civilians to take Supersonic Flights in military combat aircraft: Thunder City in Cape Town/South Africa and the famous Zhukovsky Airbase outside Moscow/Russia, known to host the MAKS air show. While Thunder City performed flights in the English Electric Lightning, Zhukvosky/Ramenskoe Airbase offered had four different, Russian/Soviet-made Supersonic Fighter Jets available for flights and arranged flights in the MiG-23 Flogger, MiG-25 Foxbat Edge of Space flights, MiG-29 Fulcrum flights and even Sukhoi Su-27 rides. The MiG-29 and Su-27 are the backbone of today’s Russian Air Force and of many former East Block Air Forces. Many countries even have older models like the MiG-21 Fishbed (Serbia). Albania even operated the Korea War-era MiG-15 Fagot until 2005. So, while tourists have been able to fly third generation jet fighters like the MiG-23 and MiG-25 and even modern fourth generation jet fighters like the MiG-29 and Su-27 in Russia, neighboring countries were still using first-Generation fighters.
Much changed since 2006 when Zhukovsky Airbase closed for tourist supersonic flight. At once, the MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29 and SU-27 were no longer available for tourists to take a ride in. In 2010, Thunder City closed their fighter operations in 2010 as well, making the English Electric Lightning flight unavailable for civilians.
Today, flight operations with civilians moved to Sokol Airbase with MiG-29 and MiG-31 Foxhound flights. With also the MiG-31 not being available until further notice, today the MiG-29 on Sokol Airbase in Russia is the last supersonic fighter jet available for flights.
MiG Flight Adventure: What can I expect when I Fly a MiG?
The MiG-29 is a truly remarkable Fighter Aircraft. As you can see from the specs the thrust/weight ratio is larger than one, so the MiG-29 can accelerate even when climbing vertically! As you can imagine, the acceleration when flying horizontally is just incredible. The acceleration of a MiG-29 afterburners pales any sports car and probably anything you’ve experienced so far. Within seconds, the MiG-29 reaches double the speed of sound, pushing your limits. Incredible forces will press you into your seat. After this spectacular take-off, the flight program including the following maneuvers commences. The MiG flight includes:
- Loopings
- Turns
- Immelman
- Split-S
- Rolls
- Spins
- High Speed Low Level Flight
- Breaking the Sound Barrier and Supersonic Flight
- Edge of Space Flight to 23km
- Take control of this modern 4th Fighter Jet
Have no fear – you’ll fly with a very nice pilot who strives to make you happy rather than overstressing your capabilitie. However, if you are looking for a really wild MiG ride (and are sure you can handle it), the pilot will deliver it. For example, one of our MiG customers has pulled 9.1G, the record for tourist jet fighter flights to date.

Top 5 Reasons for this Flight
Faster than Anyone Else: Only Supersonic Flight World-Wide
Even though some outdated advertising might suggests differently, the SOKOL Airfield in Nizhniy Novgorod is currently the only place world-wide where civilians can go supersonic (as of June 2014).
See the Stars: Edge of Space-Flight to an Altitude of 23km
The MiG-29 brings you higher than any other aircraft currently available for flights with civilians. Soar up to an altitude of 23km and witness the curvature of our blue planet on the left or gaze into the unfiltered endlessness of the universe to your right.
Push your Limits: Aerobatics up to 9G
The MiG-29 also sets standards in terms of aerobatics. No other jet is able to pull up to 9Gs and accelerate even while being in full vertical position.
Modern Jet: Only 4th Generation Fighter Jet Available
This is the most modern jet available for any civilian to fly in: While comparable to the L-39 in terms of service introduction, the MiG-29 is the only 4th generation supersonic fighter jet available for flights.
Experienced Pilots: Fly with Factory Test Pilots
You’ll fly with experienced factory test pilots of the SOKOL Aircraft Plant in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia. Their unparalleled knowledge and experience with the MiG-29 ensures your ride is both spectacular and safe.

FAQ
When is the Best Time to Fly?
Due to its northern location, the recommended flight date range is from March til October for supersonic flights. For Edge of Space flights, we recommend the winter months as the atmosphere allows highest flights then.
What's the Recommended Flight Duration?
For MiG-29 flights, we recommend at least 40 minutes as this is required for supersonic flights.
Can my Friends and Family Accompany me?
Due to military restrictions, the airfield is only accessible for clients actually flying the MiG. However, one family member or friend is allowed to accompany the guest throughout briefing and while getting dressed in a flight suit. The flight itself can be watched from a distance behind the security perimeter only.
Is it possible to receive a Souvenir Video or Photos?
All photos and videos taken on the military premises require screening and approval before public disclosure. Therefore, only authorized military photographers are allowed to take photos and videos. Flying the MiG-29 was without doubt the most exciting adventure of my life. The service provided by the GoAviator staff was excellent from beginning to the end. The time in Russia was absolutely interesting. The MiG-29 is a great airplane, and enjoying the view to the stars at the speed of sound is so unique, everything pales in comparison. This adventure isn’t cheap but worth every penny.
